University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), situated in the West End of London, is one of the largest NHS trusts in the United Kingdom and provides first class acute and specialist services. The new state-of-the-art University College Hospital, which opened in 2005, is the focal point of the trust alongside six cutting-edge specialist hospitals. UCLH was recognised for its commitment to, and excellence in, research and development when the Department of Health announced in December 2006 that it would be one of just five comprehensive biomedical research centres in the country. The NHS is facing the challenge of meeting the 18 week referral to treatment target by December 31st, 2008 and nowhere is this challenge felt more keenly than in the major acute teaching NHS Trusts.  UCLH has found that by introducing Lombardi’s Blueprint and Teamworks software supported by Logica’s Clinical Data Repository they have been able to create an important early warning system for the Operational Managers and Clinicians of the Trust.

This early warning system is programmed to alert key people if a breach is likely to occur. This can be set at varying levels so that senior managers are kept informed, and at the same time  staff are prompted to take action that will resolve the problem.
